Occupational Exposure Assessment – Heavy metal Surface Sampling

Opterra was commissioned by BAE Systems Australia to carry out surface sampling of aircraft, associated bombing/gunnery equipment and personnel clothing at BAE Systems Australia’s Williamtown Facility. The heavy metal surface sampling was carried out to determine the concentrations of heavy metals present on equipment following the completion of bombing training. An overall sampling program was developed to determine heavy metal concentrations pre, during and post bombing program. The heavy metal concentrations were compared against the relevant health exposure / dust loading limits.

The findings of the sampling program were used to determine the level of heavy metal contamination and the effectiveness of decontamination and safe handling procedures. Heavy metals that were assessed included Beryllium, Cadmium, Chromium and Lead.
